One of the lightest petrol hover mowers available today (especially when considering the high power), the Flymo XL500 has a wide 50.5cm cutting width making it suitable for medium and large sized lawns where grass collection is not required.
Being a hover mower, the huge advantage of the Flymo XL500 is dealing with inclines and slopes. Weighing only 15kg, and having a hovering capability, the Flymo XL500 can be used in a sweeping left/right motion, slashing through the thickest of vegetation both quickly and efficiently.
Obviously being petrol powered, the XL500 gives you the freedom to roam around your lawn without being constrained by electrical cable. In addition, the solid metal blade fitted on the Flymo XL500 results in a better cut than a nylon alternative would provide.
The Honda GCV160 petrol engine produces 5.5hp, sufficient for most medium and large sized lawns, and excellent at maintaining the hovering system, which smaller engines may struggle with. In addition, the engine featured on the Flymo XL500 is easy start, minimising the effort required by the operator.
Three cutting heights are available on the Flymo XL500, between 1cm and 4cm. This provides you with the flexibility of achieving your desired grass length finish.
If however, you require a striped lawn, or grass collection, a hover mower is not so suitable. The Flymo XL500 doesn't feature a grass collection box, nor a rear roller to create a striped effect.

I recently shopped around for a petrol hover mower and came to the conclusion I liked the look of the XL500. Having never owned a Flymo before , I took some convincing that it was a quality machine as opposed to their naff plastic smaller machines, but I was assured by people i trusted that it was the best petrol rotary mower out there for the price - (around £370)! I now own a Flymo XL500 and it does the job brilliantly - its easy to use, versatile and powerful so I'm happy. As an aside, I might have been less happy to pay £370 or even the £390 people seem to paying in their droves on ebay. If you're interested, the cheapest I found was a company called agmonline.co.uk which got one to me next day free delivery for £355.97 - they even threw in some free oil. So there we go, I reckon that's a good tip and for that price I definitely recommend the machine,
