Cylinder lawnmowers adopt the same basic mechanism used back in the late 19th century. The design has changed little over the years. A fixed horizontal cutting blade is positioned just off the surface of the ground, the height of which is adjustable. Over this is a fast spinning cylinder of blades. The spinning cylinder forces grass past the fixed horizontal blade, thus shearing the grass in a scissor-like motion.

When compared to ride-on, rotary and hover lawnmowers, a properly adjusted cylinder lawnmower makes the cleanest cut, which allows the grass to heal quicker, and produces a neater look.

A 30cm to 35cm cylinder width is approximately the right size for a medium sized lawn. Smaller cutting widths take longer to cut the lawn and larger widths begin to reduce the manoeuvrability of the lawnmower.
