Petrol Lawnmowers
Petrol lawnmowers are generally the
most powerful
type of lawnmower. They are great for cutting through large sized lawns
with minimal effort, and have the added benefit of not needing to be
plugged in, so no chance of getting tangled up in lengths of electrical
cable! It should be stated however, that petrol lawnmowers are also the
most
expensive, and arguably require the most skill to operate.
Petrol lawnmowers come in three flavours: rotary, hover, and cylinder:
Rotary
mowers use a petrol motor
mounted vertically on the base of the lawnmower. The motor drives
cutting blades which spin 360 degrees parallel to the garden surface,
thus cutting the grass in a slashing-like motion.
Hover
lawnmowers are
equipped with a turbine which is mounted above the cutting blades.
This turbine forces air downwards, creating a cushion of air which
lifts the lawnmower above the ground like a hovercraft.
Cylinder
lawnmowers use a
fixed horizontal cutting blade which is positioned just off the surface
of
the lawn. Over this is a fast
rotating cylinder of blades. The rotating cylinder forces grass past
the fixed horizontal blade, thus shearing the grass in a scissor-like
motion.
